In The End
In the end
I missed you by a country mile.
Always just seeing you in the distance
a little ahead of perception.
A recognizable stranger, a relative of someone
I did not know.
A vaguely familiar cousin of no one in particular.
The one who irregularly
visits someone else in the neighborhood
the one I never really see
because of the angle of the house
obscuring the view
or the way
the domino moments are stacked.
In the end I went looking for you.
I did not set out anywhere
I just began to look
knowing you were still somewhere
crossing my path
up ahead, a little bit to the side of my vision.
You have always been circling my life
like a memory of a mutual story.
The distance between us
not getting any nearer
but the connections getting more frequent.
In the end
maybe we will bump into each other
just beyond the grave of coincidence
your funeral or mine
it won't matter.
